The panel will identify key reasons that family-owned businesses get into trouble, and how these reasons may differ from non-family owned businesses.


Jan Herald Robinson.
Jan is director with Revitalization Partners, and is known for restructuring and changing management.  As a seasoned financial executive and interim manager.  Jan provides clients with strategies, operational and financial advisory services.

Renee Fellman
has been leading turnarounds since 1986 and specializes in keeping companies out of bankruptcy. She has served as Interim CEO for 11 family-owned businesses and saved multiple companies from the brink of disaster.

Christy Tobin-Presser.
Christy is a partner in the Seattle law firm of Bush Kornfeld LLP, where her practice emphasizes commercial creditor-debtor issues, out of court workout agreements, and Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganizations and liquidations.

Christina Lucas
, our moderator, heads the Asset Based Lending group at Banner Bank, providing financing for at-risk family businesses in turnaround scenarios.

Selling the Family Business

The discussion will assume a professional level understanding of business sales and acquisitions given the knowledge and experience present in the group.

Topics of discussion will include:

  • Reasons to consider selling a business
  • Valuation of a privately held company
  • Strategies for increasing business value prior to entering the marketplace
  • Facilitating a “best practice” sales process including buyer identification, qualification
  • “Win-win” negotiations


Gregory Kovsky 
is the President and Designated Broker of IBA (International Business Associates), the Pacific Northwest’s oldest business brokerage firm and a top twenty commercial real estate firm based on the February 21, 2020 PSBJ.

John Martinka
 is a long time veteran of the business transaction scene in the greater Northwest, with over 20 years of business experience supported by a master’s degree in Finance and Economics from Marquette University. His company is Martinka Consulting.

Pete McDowell
: Prior to transitioning to management and sell-side consulting at RC Advisory Services Pete held leadership positions in privately held companies.

Mark Canton
, our moderator, is a CPA and partner at Hunt Jackson PLLC. Years ago one of Mark’s clients was selling their business and had questions about negotiations related to their accounting records.
